Sondai Fort Trek - The BearFoot Travellers

Sondai Fort Trek

About Sondai Fort:

Sondai is a small fort, well, less of a fort and more a watchtower. It’s a part of the Karjat or Matheran range of mountains. A less known Fort, the name of the fort is derived from the temple of Goddess Sondai at the top of the mountain. Sondewadi, the base village for the trek is a small hamlet of a few huts.

Sondai fort is considered one of the easiest treks in Maharashtra and the best trek for someone starting on their hiking journey. The distance from the base village to the top of the fort is around 1.7 km & it will take anywhere between 2 – 2.5 hours for an average person to complete the trek. Because of the level of the trek, you do not require a local guide.

The trail starts from a parking spot at the base village and is a gradual climb of 10-15 mins until the first plateau. The 2nd part of the trail is through a forest, and then you reach a point where you have to cross two tricky rock sections, which leads to the 3rd part & the final part of the trek. This 3rd part has two staircases along the route, after which you reach the top of the Sondai fort.

If you are a beginner and want to build up confidence that you can finish treks, this fort is the best place to start at. There are too many dogs at the top. You can give them water to drink. Sometimes they even follow you to the base. There is no parking available as such but there is a land where you can park your vehicles and pay the locals some fees.

Things to carry:
1. A water bottle & thermos flask
2. First-aid kit
3. Toiletries
4. Glucose & snacks
5. Water for dogs.
